Introduction

This slide show has images of old trains. Some images come from books; but most are on obsolete notes and stock certificates from my collection at the time I created the presentation in 2003. I originally presented it for a couple local coin clubs.

I originally designed the show to use a 320 x 240 screen resolution projector of the day so the pictures would be close to full screen size at the time. That’s how old it is. To enlarge the images to make them larger now, zoom your screen to the highest percent where you can still see the full width of the notes. On my computer 200% is gives me the best rendition of the images. To change the setting in Windows, use the zoom button/pop-up list on the lower right corner of the Explorer. In Chrome, the zoom control is under the Customize button on the upper right. Remember to set the zoom back when you are done.

Use the 'Next' or 'Back' button to position the next or previous image to the top for the screen.

A Replica of Best Friend as it pulled the first scheduled passenger train
in U.S. over the rails on Christmas Day, 1830, in Charleston, South Carolina.

The DeWitt Clinton. On its maiden run in 1831, it burned the umbrellas
provided to protect the passengers and then proceeded to burn their clothes.
It was supposed to use coal, but they used wood to make the fire hotter.

The York, created by Phineas Davis, went into regular service in 1831
pulling the York Express 13 miles between Baltimore and Ellicot's Mills
at a blazing 13 miles per hour according to its time table.

Old Ironsides, a five-ton locomotive, had it first run in November, 1832,
on the Philadelphia, Germantown, and Norristown RR.
Built by Matthias Baldwin, the first of 59,000 Baldwins.
